What is Variable Resistance and How Does it Work?

Variable resistance, referred to as variable resistance training (VRT), is a popular method of strength training that applies a dynamic range of force to the muscle.

As Dr. Jaquish discovered in his bone density research, this closely follows the natural curve of the human body’s strength capability in a given range of motion.

VRT compels your muscles to work harder where they are strongest in order to meet the requirements of an exercise.

Put simply, the resistance changes through the whole range of motion.

Weights provide static resistance. Chains, latex bands, and (sometimes) cable machines deliver varying levels of resistance.

Variable resistance delivers the best results when the force is provided by heavy resistance bands.

In the words of Christian Bosse, “the resistance provided by chains is linear, whilst bands provide the resistance exponentially.”

Take a look at our infographic below to get an overview of variable resistance and how it works.
